Please tell me you've read at least 1 book in the past 2 weeks! I haven't been able to complete any books yet for the 50 Book Challenge. What's a librarian to do???
First, I'll stop panicking about it.
Second, I'll just keep reading and listening to the two books I'm enjoying right now. I'm reading Gregory Maguire's The Next Queen of Heaven (thanks for the present, Mom!) and I'm listening to Susan Elizabeth Phillips' What I Did for Love (thanks for the library for letting me borrow it!).
I know myself well enough to realize that I have patterns of heavy reading (read books like candy!) and lighter (who am I kidding, I'm reading nothin'!) reading throughout the year. These patterns correspond to the energy I have for other things I like to do like crocheting and paper crafting. When I can step back from the fog of panic I create for myself, I can realize that not finishing a book in a week is not really a problem and that there will be weeks during which I'll read two or three books.
The 50 Book Challenge isn't meant to be a life or death event. No one is going to harm me for not meeting the goal. No one, with the possible exception of my perfectionist self, is going to judge me harshly for reading only 45 books! So let's make a promise, I'll support you when you're panicking or feeling defeated by the challenge, and you can remind me that reading is a pleasurable event and not a competition with myself. Deal? Thanks!
By the way, what are you currently reading that you enjoy?
