Every January, lovers of children's literature await the news of which books won these coveted awards. The Caldecott Award is for the best illustrated book for children of the previous year (2010) and the Newbery is for the best written literature for children of the previous year.
The 2011 winner of the Caldecott Award is A Sick Day For Amos McGee by Philip Stead, illustrated by Erin Stead. Runners up included Dave the Potter by Laban Carrick Hill and Interrupting Chicken by David Stein.
The 2011 winner of the Newbery Award is Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool, a wonderful historical fiction story. Runners up included Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer Holm, One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia, Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus and Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman.
Of course, all winners of these awards become instantly popular, so if you want your chance to read them, be sure to request them through our library catalog or by asking anyone at the library to help you.
